The Otego Historical Society |
The Otego Historical Society is undertaking a tremendous challenge and we need your help. The Society is attempting to update "The Bicentennial History of Otego" by Helena Northup Myers. This extensive local history, written in 1976 and posted here in its entirety, covered every home and business in Otego. Since 1976, many owners have come and gone and many new homes have been built. Add to this migration a total change in the addressing system brought about by our 911 emergency system and you have quite the chore to bring local historical records up-to-date.
Back in 1976, Helena wrote "The task of locating the houses and identifying them accurately is no small task. Unless deeds are examined, it is almost impossible to make positive identification".... of course, this was before the Internet! Today with the help of the Net, everybody can do their small bit to help. This is where you come in. We would like you to be part of this project which gives you a chance to leave your little informational bread crumbs on the trail of time for your great-great grandchildren to find. Remember, some day in the far future, one of your future family members will be searching out their ancestors and this might be one of the only places that you can leave them some clues to their past.
We encourage you to locate your home in the book and follow the instructions below to submit an update on your home or business. Remember that house and street numbers may have changed and if you're not sure about your house, ask one of your neighbors that have been here for awhile. Also remember that many of our older residents are not online but they have a wealth of knowledge. If possible, please help them submit their property. Years of work were put into the 1976 edition and now it is our turn to continue a history book so complete that very few towns in America can duplicate.
As Helena wrote "It has been my purpose to bring this book up-to-date. Keeping this in mind, it is our hope that the facts will once more come alive, and the value of the history presented will be preserved." Please attempt to make sure your information is accurate and if you are not totally sure, let us know and we will help to verify it.
If you would like to help in this quest over and above this form, please let us know. We always have chores for those who love history and would like to help preserve it. Thank You
